Major Redevelopment Coming to Preston Road (SH 289)

Real Estate August 19, 2025

Even more changes are on the horizon for Celina and surrounding communities. The redevelopment of State Highway 289—better known as Preston Road—has officially been included in Texas’ 2026 Unified Transportation Program. This project will extend through Celina into Grayson County, with construction scheduled between 2026 and 2029. The estimated cost of this major improvement: $42.4 million.

Governor Greg Abbott recently announced the state’s new 10-year transportation plan, a record-setting $146 billion investment in Texas infrastructure. Managed by the Texas Department of Transportation, the plan focuses on easing congestion, improving safety, and preparing for the state’s rapidly growing population and economy.

“This more than $146 billion investment in our roadways will help Texas meet the critical needs of our growing state as more people and businesses move here,” said Governor Abbott. “By investing billions of dollars in our transportation network today, we will build the future of Texas for generations to come.”

The Texas Transportation Commission is set to adopt the 2026 plan this week. Highlights include:

  • $101.6 billion for projects to improve safety, connectivity, and economic development.

  • Nearly $45 billion for roadway development and routine maintenance.

  • $17 billion dedicated to safety improvements statewide.

  • $669 million allocated for rural corridors and key economic roadways.

For Celina, the redevelopment of Preston Road represents a critical step forward in supporting both current residents and the growth still to come. Improved infrastructure will not only ease traffic flow but also create stronger connections across Collin and Grayson counties—building the foundation for a thriving future.
